Just In: Buffalo Bills reportedly confirm the Signing of Another MLB player

The Buffalo Bills have reached an agreement with pitcher Jake Walsh on a minor league contract, as reported on his MLB.com player page. As part of the deal, Walsh will have the opportunity to participate in the major league Spring Training.

Walsh, aged 28, was selected by the Cardinals in the 16th round of the 2017 draft. Initially starting his professional career as a starter, he transitioned to a full-time bullpen role in 2021. Between 2021 and 2022, Walsh showcased his skills at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels, boasting a combined 2.17 ERA and an impressive 37% strikeout rate. However, his playing time during this period was restricted to just 40 innings due to two lengthy stints on the injured list. Walsh made his major league debut in May 2022, pitching 2 2/3 innings across three appearances, where he conceded four runs on three hits and two walks.

Despite a disappointing start to his major league career, Walsh showed promise after transitioning to a bullpen role. However, the 2023 season didn’t go as planned, with his performance slipping significantly. With a 5.28 ERA and a decline in strikeout rate coupled with an increase in walks, the Cardinals ultimately released him from his contract in July to free up roster space.

  1. After remaining unsigned for the rest of the 2023 season, Walsh now has an opportunity to compete for a spot on the Braves’ roster during Spring Training. While Atlanta’s bullpen appears mostly settled with established arms, Walsh could emerge as a valuable depth option if he can overcome his past struggles, especially considering his earlier success in relief pitching.
