Stephen Kenny has told Mikey Johnston’s critics that they should learn to appreciate the ‘unique’ Celtic talent.

Johnston has become a whipping Bhoy by an element of the Parkhead support having struggled to establish himself as a first-team player since making his debut back in 2017. The skillful winger has been plagued by fitness and injury issues throughout his career and has been a bit-part player under Brendan Rodgers and former bosses Ange Postecoglou and Neil Lennon.

Johnston, 24, was sent out on loan to Portugal last season where he sparkled with Vitoria Guimaraes, earning international recognition as he switched his allegiances from Scotland to the Republic of Ireland. Few people rate him as highly as Stephen Kenny – the man who handed Johnston his first cap in March. And the former Ireland gaffer insists Johnston still has the potential to become a top player.

He said: “People need to appreciate Mikey. He has come through the academy at Celtic to play for the first team, which isn’t easy.

“For whatever reason, he’s had a level of criticism at Celtic but he’s a unique talent. The Irish public love him and I think he’ll go on to become an outstanding winger. He’s capable of brilliant things.
