Leeds United should avoid reigniting interest in summer target, as disastrous loan spell set for early end

The Whites were first keen on signing Gustavo Hamer from Coventry City, who was even keen on making the move to Elland Road after an offer was made, but Premier League money, in the end, told.

Cameron Archer was also on the club’s radar in the final few weeks of the window before the Blades were able to swoop in and agree a deal for somewhere in the region of £18 million.

The third and final one then came on deadline day as Leeds held talks to sign Luke Thomas on loan from Leicester City, but they were again trumped to his signature.

However, it is fair to say Thomas’ move to Bramall Lane has not gone to plan and it is now being reported that it is set to be cut short early, with new manager Chris Wilder having handed him just one start.

Daniel Farke has already confirmed Leeds are in the market for a new left-back this month with Sam Byram and Junior Firpo having both struggled with injuries this season.

Given Leeds’ interest in Thomas during the summer, it is clear that Farke recognised this in the summer, but they must avoid reigniting their interest if he becomes available again.

It took Thomas eight appearances for the Blades until he was not on the losing side and his performances in a defence which is comfortably the worst in the Premier League should be ringing alarm bells.

With that in mind, if Thomas was to come to Leeds, he would be arriving at the club with his confidence levels on the floor, but they will need someone ready to hit the ground running given the little margin for error at the top of the Championship.

Hopefully Leeds have identified other targets able to come in at left-back given how important it is to finally bring in the right man.
