The Toronto Maple Leafs learned Tuesday that one of their high scoring prospects would be shutdown for the year with season ending shoulder surgery.

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Ty Voit was not high on the Toronto Maple Leafs radar.

He stood just 5’10” and missed out on the 2020-21 season because of COVID and had just one season in the Ontario Hockey League to his name where he recorded eight goals and 28 points in 49 games as a 16-year old.

Coming out of COVID, Voit exploded for 26-goals and 80-points in 2021-22 for the Sarnia Sting and then finished second in the OHL in scoring the following season with 105-points as a 19-year old.

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native was expected to compete for a spot on the Marlies this past fall, however he sustained an injury in development camp that kept him out for more than two months to start the season.

Voit would finally get healthy at the end of November and made his professional debut on December 1 for the Newfoundland Growlers where he picked up an assist and then followed it up with a three assist game one night later.

After putting together a five game point streak to start his Growlers career which included a pair of goals and eight points in total he was called up to the Toronto Marlies.

Voit made his American Hockey League debut on December 20, however just minutes into his first game he left the contest with an “upper-body injury”; and now Joshua Kloke reported Tuesday that he would have season-ending surgery. Kloke also reported that the plan was for Voit to be ready for training camp in 2024-25.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had to deal with several prospects lose out on their seasons and careers with injuries early on in their journey.

Current third line winger Nicholas Robertson has spent four different stints since 2021 on the IR due to injuries to his knee, shoulder and leg. The speedy sniper has yet to play 40 games in a hockey season since his OHL days back during the 2019-20 season.

Joseph Woll who has stolen the net for the club has also been dealing with injuries since turning pro back in 2019. The former Boston College goalie has missed time with shoulder and ankle injuries, along a couple other undisclosed injuries when he was with the Marlies. A forgotten player, is former CHL Goalie of the Year Ian Scott who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 draft and would lead the country with a 38-8-2 record with 1.83 GAA and .932 save percentage while playing with the Prince Albert Raiders in 2018-19.

Scott was expected to compete with Woll as the future goalie for the franchise, however, injuries limited him to just 179 minutes of professional hockey between 2019-20 and 2021-22 which led him to retiring in the summer of 2022.
