Breakout defender feeling refreshed, ready to roll for Detroit Lions…

ALLEN PARK — Alim McNeill and the Detroit Lions always seemed to have Week 18 circled for the breakout defensive lineman’s return to action from a sprained knee.

And with McNeill back at practice and in his on-brand upbeat and optimistic mood, it’s looking and sounding likely the stud interior defender is back in the middle against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 18. Hitting that goal is something that means a lot to McNeill, too.

“That was, that’s what helped me through this in a way,” McNeill said. “Just me telling myself that and just pushing for that goal. But, yeah, that was definitely comforting and good to know. It was also good to know that I didn’t need surgery and all that stuff. Fortunately, I didn’t need that. It was just a sprain, so I just let it calm right down, healed back up.

“I’ve just been sitting for four weeks. Just lifting upper body. Squatting. So, I really feel like I just came out of the offseason in a way. I feel really, really, really good. I don’t feel it when I’m in this (brace), so it’s kinda a wonderful situation. But I feel really good. Really refreshed. All I’ve been doing, the first two weeks, all I could do was sleep and eat. I got back my sleep and whatever from those past trips and stuff like that, so I’m good. Super good.

And that knee brace McNeill speaks of is hard to miss. McNeill says he has to wear it in games for the immediate future, but that it’s not a problem as it’s custom to his knee and situation.

“Obviously, I feel it’s there. But at the same time, I don’t, honestly,” McNeill said in the locker room on Wednesday. “When I was on the field I didn’t think twice about it. It doesn’t limit me from being to get in and out of my cuts or being able to bend or stuff like that.”

McNeill returning ahead of the postseason is nothing to scoff at. The third-year interior defender was playing some of the best ball at his position around the league when he went down with the knee injury in New Orleans. He was creating pressure and getting home at a career-best clip, and McNeill was getting league-wide recognition for his high-level play.
