It was a balanced approach for Michigan’s offense in the Wolverines 30-24 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Michigan won the time of possession battle 33:28 to 26:32 and outgained Ohio State in rushing yards 156 to 107, with both stats being keys to their victory. However, a quarterback was needed to win this game as well and J.J. McCarthy made pivotal plays throughout the afternoon to be a decisive factor in the final outcome.

McCarthy was 16-of-20 for 148 yards and one-touchdown. McCarthy and the passing attack were highly efficient, effective and opportune. On a touchdown drive in the second quarter, McCarthy was particularly dangerous.

On a 4th & 1 offensive coordinator and acting head coach Sherrone Moore dialed up a passing play won the chess match against Ohio State. McCarthy found tight end Colston Loveland in the flat for a seven-yard gain to extend the drive.

Just three plays later McCarthy threaded the needle and made a decisive throw under pressure and found Roman Wilson in traffic. The elite throw, a 22-yard touchdown, put Michigan up 14-3.

Sherrone Moore said he knew McCarthy would make a huge play and shared what he told McCarthy before the game.

“When the game matters in some critical situations I’m gonna put the ball in your hands because I know you’re going to make a great decision,” Moore said. “You’re going to help us win and you’re going to find one of your dudes.”
