The Green Bay Packers have a lot of decisions to make regarding the future of their roster in the coming months. One of the biggest, if not the biggest, is what the Packers are doing with star edge rusher Rashan Gary.
Rashan Gary has a five-year option on his rookie contract. His base salary is $10.89 million. Depending on how the new deal is structured, the Packers could even open up cap space in 2023 if they extend the contract. Even with the Packers’ opening time shrinking each week, extending the season is still very much a possibility. And Gary’s side is open to that scenario. However, if overtime doesn’t happen, one team is rumored to be interested in pursuing Gary. IMG 0117

The Falcons’ pass rush has been pretty lackluster overall this season, with just five sacks through the first five games and defensive end David Onyemata leading the team with 1.5. Their edge sacks were the biggest problem as Bud Dupree and Lorenzo Carter combined for just 1.5 sacks.
Additionally, Dupree is a looming free agent, so expect the front office to aggressively pursue someone who can pressure opposing offenses this offseason.
Gary would be great in Atlanta’s system because he is best as a two-point shooter or wing guard. It also doesn’t hurt that the 2019 first-round pick had 4.5 sacks in Green Bay’s first five contests while recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season.

Spotrac’s market value estimates indicate that Gary — a 25-year-old outside linebacker for the Packers — is expected to sign a four-year extension worth $104.2 million with the Packers. That would make Gary fourth in the league among outside linebackers and 22nd overall in the NFL. Watching T.J. Watt signed a four-year, $112 million deal at age 26, while Maxx Crosby signed a four-year, $94 million deal at age 24.
The Packers have a rich history of paying their players. Jaire Alexander, David Bakhtiari, Kenny Clark, Aaron Jones and Elgton Jenkins all signed long-term contracts with the Packers, making them one of the highest paid players in the league.
It would be shocking to see the Packers pass on a cornerstone like Gary. Even with his recent injury history, the Packers will likely be ranked #52 soon enough.
