The Carolina Panthers are the NFL’s only undefeated team, warming to their decision to select former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Especially former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud, the No. 1 overall pick, moved on to the Houston Texans.
Panthers head coach Frank Reich took the podium Monday to weigh in on the team’s latest loss, a 42-24 loss to the Detroit Lions.
At one point during the conversation, a reporter asked Reich about his relationship with Panthers owner David Tepper. Reich didn’t really pull any punches with his response.
“There are different philosophies about ownership,” Reich said. “Some owners stay away and don’t interact much, while others do. [David Tepper’s] philosophy is that he’s involved.”
Reich went on to say that while working on the property was a “good” experience, he insisted it wasn’t fun.
“It was just a short experience, but it was a really good experience,” Reich said. “It wasn’t fun, it’s not fun. I wouldn’t characterize these matches as fun matches.”
NFL fans quickly jumped to the conclusion that Reich meant by Tepper’s “involvement” with his team, namely that he had the final say in drafting Young over Stroud. Reich just came out and said it. Holy smoke.

It was painful to watch because it wasn’t the first time I’d heard him say it. It’s an open secret around the league that ownership heavily influenced the QB pick, which is never ideal.
This is bad news for Panthers fans. With that kind of structure, you won’t have a winning franchise.
A textbook story where a b-school nerd (Tepper) thinks his contribution is truly valuable on the football field. No! This is not a hedge fund you stupid scoundrel!!
Looks like David Tepper decided to sign Bryce Young even though the coaching staff wanted CJ Stroud and THANK YOU he did.
