Billy Frampton: Good Game or Bad Game? Collingwood are said to be frontrunners to secure the services of outgoing North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein, with several sides surrounding the 35-year-old.

Goldstein’s desire to leave the Kangaroos was confirmed by the club a week ago when the free agent landed at another club after 315 games in blue and white.

Rye’s experienced market is one of the most active ahead of this upcoming transfer window, with a number of parties continuing and/or signing new highs for the 2024 season.

These include Essendon, Geelong, GWS, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs.

With Goldstein’s departure, the Roses are set to increase their support for new No.1 Tristan Xer, with Port Adelaide’s Brynn Teakle among the names linked to Arden Street. Teakle has also been linked with the Giants and Dogs, with the latter losing Jordon Sweet to the Power, while West Coast are interested in GWS tall Matt Flynn.

The next to jump on the “carousel” is Collingwood, which, according to News Corp, is considered the first in Goldstein’s competition.

According to the publication’s report, St Kilda and Essendon are also interested in the 16-year veteran, but the Magpies may be the most suitable side to sign Goldstein.

While the Magpies already had standout wheel option Darcy Cameron and American jumper Mason Cox, the Magpies were left behind by injury earlier this season, with defender Billy Frampton left to fill the role.

Goldstein would provide plenty of support and selection pressure for Craig McRae’s ruck stocks, while providing cover for rising talls Aiden Begg and Oscar Steene. As an unrestricted free agent, Collingwood does not have to give up draft capital on Goldstein, while the Roses could be left with little or no compensation depending on the ruckman’s next contract.

The Magpies have also been linked with Adelaide free agent Tom Doede, but being a restricted free agent could force the Olympic Park side to open trade talks with the Crows if they decide to accept Collingwood’s offer.

Free agency opens next Friday – six days after Collingwood’s final against Brisbane.
