‘It was genuine’: Dees star’s manager opens up on bombshell trade talk

Clayton Oliver’s manager says interest from clubs in the star midfielder was “genuine” before he and Melbourne found common ground.

Oliver’s future has been the talk of the AFL world this week with rival clubs believing he could be lured away from the Dees amid disagreements over his standards and behaviour.

Dees confirmed on Friday that Oliver will remain at the club after heated discussions.

Nick Gieschen, Oliver’s manager, said the week in the spotlight had been difficult for his client. “It was a meeting, but there is an opportunity to develop from all of this. After many difficult, honest and powerful conversations, it gave him a chance to get something off his chest and time to heal,” he told AFL Media.

– He really loves the Melbourne Football Club, it’s like his family. He grew up there, knows the football club and the players and the coaches very well and sometimes the families argue, but he has huge respect for ‘Goody’ (coach Simon Goodwin) and as challenging as it was, I don’t “I don’t think that he can see himself playing for another under the coach, because he has the support of the football club.”

Gieschen said other clubs had shown “real concern” for Oliver and his situation when discussing his future.

She admitted that her interest in Oliver was “genuine”. “Obviously it picked up a bit. As the buzz grew, there were a few clubs operating and it was genuine,” he said.

“But at the same time it was just based on whether Clarry wanted out or whether Melbourne lost patience with him and they understood the situation very well.

“Everyone was a great club and really respectful and understanding when everything was settled and it looked like he was going to stay.”
