18-year-old dies after being ejected in rollover crash

PORT HURON, MI — An 18-year-old Port Huron Township woman died in a single-vehicle rollover crash on New Year’s Day in Port Huron.

Emily Lynn Knox was a front seat passenger in a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro driven by 20-year-old Port Huron man who lost control of the vehicle while heading north on Pine Grove Avenue near Thomas Edison Drive around 3:45 p.m. Jan. 1.

The vehicle then hit a telephone pole and rolled over, police said. Knox was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Port Huron Police Capt. Marcy Kuehn said Knox, who’d taken part last year in the department’s new Youth Academy for high school students, was interested in law enforcement as a potential career path.

“Emily had a strong passion for law enforcement and worked hard showing a lot of dedication in the youth academy,” commented Kuehn, noting pictures on her Facebook page in her academy uniform. “She was excited to start school this past fall at Saginaw Valley (State University) for criminal justice.”

The driver and two backseat passengers — an 18-year-old Port Huron man and a 19-year-old Port Huron woman — were treated at McLaren Port Huron and later released.

Speed is believed to have played a factor in the crash, police said. The Port Huron Police Department Accident Investigation Unit and Criminal Investigation Division is continuing the investigation.
