The superintendent announced the cancellation of the homecoming football game, but it is now rescheduled for Saturday Oct. 5
Five teens were involved in a single-car accident that left one 14-year-old dead in Caanan Township Friday evening, according to the Wooster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Superintendent Kevin Leatherman confirmed the five teens were Norwayne High School and middle students.
Authorities say the 14-year-old has been identified as Aurora Krahenbuhl of Creston.
The Wooster Post of OSHP was dispatched to the fatal crash at approximately 4:14 p.m., authorities said.
According to OSHP, a 17-year-old was operating a 2007 Honda Civic traveling northbound on Caanan Road near East Sterling Road. The Honda lost control and drove off the right side of the road, striking a ditch and two landscape islands before turning over multiple times and coming to a stop.
Krahenbuhl, 14, succumbed to her injuries at the scene, OSHP said.
Authorities say the driver was transported to Wooster Community Hospital for minor injuries. Three other passengers were in the vehicle and taken to the hospital, according to the Wooster post.
OSHP says a 15-year-old passenger with serious injuries was taken by air to Akron Children’s Hospital.
A 14-year-old and 13-year-old passenger were transported to Lodi Hospital, and the latter went to the Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital with minor injuries, OSHP said.
Leatherman announced the cancellation of Friday evening’s homecoming football game against Chippewa High School due to the tragic incident.
Norwayne High School later announced in a post on X that the football game against Chippewa is being rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m.
“Please keep all of our students and families in your thoughts and prayers and we mourn this loss,” Leatherman said.
The Village of Creston Police Department shared the superintendent’s message in a Facebook post and expressed their sorrows for students.
“The officers of the Creston Police Department’s thoughts and prayers are with the families involved in this terribly tragic incident.” The department said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, the families and the entire Norwayne community at this very difficult time.”
The crash remains under investigation. OSHP says drugs or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
